This book disappointed me a little. I expected full algorithms descriptions and derivations of most important formulas. Neither is present. Descriptions are very superficial and practically imposible is to implement algorithms directly "from book". So the book is useless for engineers and scientists. Maybe it could be useful for students, but lack of some derivations is a great disadvantage here. I can recommend this book to readers not directly involved in digital speech processing, who want to broaden their knowledge in this signal processing area.

Assuming a basic knowledge of the frequentist approach to finite population sampling, Bayesian Methods for Finite Population Sampling describes Bayesian and predictive approaches to inferential problems with an emphasis on the likelihood principle. The authors demonstrate that a variety of levels of prior information can be used in survey sampling in a Bayesian manner. Situations considered range from a noninformative Bayesian justification of standard frequentist methods when the only prior information available is the belief in the exchangeability of the units to a full-fledged Bayesian model. Intended primarily for graduate students and researchers in finite population sampling, this book will also be of interest to statisticians who use sampling and lecturers and researchers in general statistics and biostatistics.

This is truely the best book on discriminant analysis in print - designed with the researcher in mind. Several appendices include actual program output from SAS, BMDP, and SPSS, which helps the user determine what to look for and how to intepret one's statistical results. Also informative is Huberty's clear distinction between predictive and descriptive discriminant analysis. The distinction is critical in practice (many researchers still get it wrong!)- -this book wil help clarify when to use one or the other.

This is a very useful, advanced references for HR professionals or I/O Psychologists struggling with some of the stickier issues concerning validating predictors. Particular strengths include chapters on job component validity, content validation, and banding. Many of the points raised in the book are particularly relevant for small business situtations, and readings from it might be very useful for an advanced class or seminar on HR in small business contexts. However, the authors assume that their readers are quite familiar with test validity and job relatedness, and readers without a background on these topics should start with a strong introductory text, such as Ployhart et al.'s

I admit I was a little skeptical when I started reading this book. It is a compilation of various papers related to project leadership. The beauty of the book is that is provides several different ways of looking at leadership. From soft skills to hard measurements there is likely something in this book for everyone. There are probably a couple of papers in the book that you will NOT like. I would recommend this book to any developing project manager. (I think that covers all of us!) Read and re-read those papers that you can relate to and don't worry about the ones that you don't relate to. I would expect that anyone would relate to more than 50% of this book and that is well worth your time.

Adult cognitive development is one of the most important, yet neglected aspects in the study of human psychology. Although the development of cognition and intelligence during childhood and adolescence is of great interest to researchers, educators, and parents, they assume that this development stops progressing in any significant manner when people reach adulthood. In fact, cognition and intelligence do continue to progress in very significant ways. In Developmental Influences on Adult Intelligence, Warner Schaie lays out the reasons why we should continue to study cognitive development in adulthood, and presents the history, latest data, and results from the Seattle Longitudinal Study (SLS), which now extends to over 45 years. The SLS is organized around five questions: Does intelligence change uniformly throughout adulthood, or are there different life-course-ability patterns? At what age and at what magnitude can decrement in ability be reliably detected? What are the patterns and magnitude of generational differences? What accounts for individual differences in age-related change in adulthood? Can the intellectual decline that increases with age be reversed by educational intervention? From his work on the SLS, Schaie derived a conceptual model that he presents in this volume. The model represents his view on the factors that influence cognitive development throughout the lifespan, and provides a rationale for the various influences that he investigated--genetic factors, early and current family environment, life styles, the experience of chronic disease, and various personality attributes. The data in this volume include the 1998 longitudinal cycle of the SLS. In light of both new data and revised analyses, psychometric and neuropsychological assessments have been linked in long-term data to aid in the early identification of risk for dementia in later life. Schaie also presents new data and conclusions on the impact of personality on cognition. The volume includes correlation matrices and web-access information for select data sets that might be useful for secondary analysis or as examples for exercises in methods classes. Developmental Influences on Adult Intelligence is an important resource for researchers and students in developmental, cognitive, and social psychology.

This series is a long and successful collection of volumes on the most important topics in statistics. Professor Krishnaiah from the University of Pittsburgh was one of the first editors. When the famous Professor C. R. Rao moved from India to the US he joined his colleague Krishnaiah at Pittsburgh and helped coedit some of these handbooks. After Krishnaiah's death Professor Rao continued to edit these volumes and brought in some of his colleagues as co-editors.
This is volume 27 and it contains 27 chapters on the topic of medical statistics and epidemiology. This is very important to me as I work in the medical research area.
The editors have assembly the leading experts in statistical methodology and applied biostatistical reserach to produce these 27 chapters.
Ross Prentice (coauthor of 2 edition of a book on survival analysis and the Cox model) wrote an overview chapter on the topics to be covered. He has had a long career at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle Washington. Fred Hutchinson was a famous manager for the Cincinnati Reds in the early 1960s and brought them to the World Series in 1961. He died of cancer and his estate started an endowment to form this research center.
Don Rubin covers causal analysis in Chapter 2. Rubin is an expert on causal inference, Bayesian methods and missing data. He presents the randomized trial approaches of Fisher and Neyman introduces propensity scores. A Bayesian approach is also covered.
Other chapters cover epidemiologic study designs, assessments for biomarkers, linear and nonlinear regression models, logistic regression, regression models for count data, mixed linear and nonlinear models, survival analysis, competing risk models, cluster analysis, factor analysis, structural equation models, crossover trials, group sequential methods, early phase trials (I and II), late phase (III and IV), missing data, Meta-Analysis, multiple comparisons, sample size determination
statistical learning using splines, evidence based medicine, marginal regression models, use of difference equations in modeling and the Bayesian approach to medical inference.
This volume is over 800 pages and each chapter is fairly long and includes large bibliographies.

I bought the book when I took the course from Yogesh Jaluria (the authur). I found it to be an excellently written book with clear explanation of the numerical methods before each example. This book is a reflection of his teaching which is also superb. It might not be as comprehensive as Numerical Recipe but I found it to be much more tangible and clearer. I highly recommend it to to all engineering AND science students. There are only two grips I have with the book, all the codes are written in FORTRAN 77, which is a bit dated depending on your point of view, the other is that the pages like to fall off over time in the softcover copy.

The Black Elderly: Satisfaction and Quality of Later Life (Haworth Social Work Practice)
Average Reviews:

Even though this is a hardcover book, it could have been a study in any journal for university libraries. The book says the elderly survive better when they have family responsibilities, a good income, education, church involvement, and good health. Well, that seems obvious enough. The book does try to spell out how the black elderly may differ from their white counterparts.
The book may be getting dated. It says nothing on Latinos, though they are now the largest group of color. It says nothing on Muslims, though more and more Black Americans are converting to Islam. Within the last five years, two African-American doctors produced a book on the health of older black women. It said white men are genally satisfied with life at retirement, but black women are not. Black women are more likely to be divorced or never married and may be caring for the children of their dysfunctional children. Thus, new research contradicts the "Black Elderly" book which implies that black seniors are happier than whites.
My parents are becoming elderly and this book is helping me to think about the issues that may affect them soon.

In The Black Elderly: Satisfaction and Quality of Later Life, authors Marguerite Coke and James Twaite present the results of an empirical study of factors that influence the well-being of older black Americans. Like all older individuals in industrial nations, elderly blacks are confronted with negative attitudes toward old people. But in spite of their minority status in society, with its economic and social disadvantages, elderly blacks have effective coping strategies for dealing with growing old. It is the success of these coping strategies that the authors reveal to readers and upon which they build recommendations to encourage healthy aging in the black community.Through comprehensive research into the subject, the authors provide readers with a theoretical framework which identifies the variables that are most closely associated with subjective well-being among older Blacks. An empirical test of the model is described and the questionnaire is included.Professionals and scholars in social work, gerontology, African-American studies, and anthropology will find The Black Elderly a positive approach to supporting the elderly black community. Readers with interests in cross-cultural aspects of counseling and gerontology will find much enlightenment in this book with its research and insight on:
history: overviews West African culture and the role of history in the development of the black American family
church: analyzes the function and importance of this institution on the black community
family: explores the importance of family and how it affects life satisfaction
health: determines how perceived health status affects individuals’feelings of life satisfactionThe authors’findings on the strong and diverse support systems of this group assist professionals, students, and policymakers in better understanding how to continue to effect healthy aging for black Americans. The Black Elderly is of particular interest to social workers, students in social work programs, and professionals who deal with aging persons or the black community and can benefit from historical background knowledge of blacks in this country and how societal institutions affect the well-being of this group.

Regression Methods in Biostatistics: Linear, Logistic, Survival, and Repeated Measures Models (Statistics for Biology and Health) Review

Regression Methods in Biostatistics: Linear, Logistic, Survival, and Repeated Measures Models (Statistics for Biology and Health)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The authors say that they created this book to fit with a course they taught at UC San Francisco to medical students. The book is very sophisticated and a great reference source for practicing biostatisticians in industry or research. It surprises me a little that they find it effective for there non-technical audience. Although the topics are technical and many are advanced they do cover it in a conceptual way without heavy mathematics but still requiring some statistics classes as prerequisite.
Regression does not cover all the techniques of biostatistics but as the authors point out the four topics in the subtitle are among the most important. I know this from my many years of experience as a bisostatistician in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. They use many good practical examples useing many of the common variables studies in many clinical trials where physical exams are given to record blood pressure and other vital signs and chemistry labs are done to determine cholesterol levels and other things that can be factors in various diseases. Also glucose levels are very important to monitor for diabetes trials.
In addition to the standard topics general estimating equations and generalized linear models are covered and where appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. There is even a chapter on complex surveys a topic important when quality of life is an endpoint and survey instruments are used to measure it.
In the survival analysis chapter the Kaplan-Meier curves, log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models are covered as expected but the authors go further to include extensions of the Cox model when the proportional hazards assumption fails. My only disappointment is that there is no coverage of actuarial life tables. At the medical device companies that I worked for it was common to get interval data on events rather than continuous data and then the Cutler-Ederer life table method is the analog for interval data to the Kaplan-Meier estimator for continuous data.
The book covers many topics but is concise as the authors claim. The authors provide a lot of examples that they work out using the statistical package Stata. The authors claim that Stata is the package of choice for biostatistics. This may be the case in academic settings but is certainly not the case in the pharmaceutical industry where SAS is used almost exclusively. I think that it would have been better to show how to write the computer code for solving these problems both in SAS and Stata. To the authors credit Stat is a very good package for their purpose and they do at times mention SAS and SPSS which are the other two major statistical packages used in industry.
All in all this is a very good book that is worth its list price. I will use it as a reference. it also contains a very nice bibliography of 9 pages.

This new book provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes. Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way. The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course is statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided. For many students and researchers learning to use these methods, this one book may be all they need to conduct and interpret multipredictor regression analyses. The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. The senior author, Charles E. McCulloch, is head of the Division and author of Generalized Linear Mixed Models (2003), Generalized, Linear, and Mixed Models (2000), and Variance Components (1992).

The technology of neural networks has attracted much attention in recent years. Their ability to learn nonlinear relationships is widely appreciated and is utilized in many different types of applications; modelling of dynamic systems, signal processing, and control system design being some of the most common. The theory of neural computing has matured considerably over the last decade and many problems of neural network design, training and evaluation have been resolved. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the most popular class of neural network, the multilayer perceptron, and shows how it can be used for system identification and control. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficient theoretical background to understand the characteristics of different methods, to be aware of the pit-falls and to make proper decisions in all situations. The subjects treated include: - System identification: multilayer perceptrons; how to conduct informative experiments; model structure selection; training methods; model validation; pruning algorithms - Control: direct inverse, internal model, feedforward, optimal and predictive control; feedback linearization and instantaneous-linearization-based controllers - Case studies: prediction of sunspot activity; modelling of a hydraulic actuator; control of a pneumatic servomechanism; water-level control in a conical tank The book is very application-oriented and gives detailed and pragmatic recommendations that guide the user through the plethora of methods suggested in the literature. Furthermore, it attempts to introduce sound working procedures that can lead to efficient neural network solutions. This will make the book invaluable to the practitioner and as a textbook in courses with a significant hands-on component.

This book describes the principles and techniques needed to analyze data that form a multiway contingency table. Wickens discusses the description of association in such data using log-linear and log-multiplicative models and defines how the presence of association is tested using hypotheses of independence and quasi-independence. The application of the procedures to real data is then detailed. This volume does not presuppose prior experience or knowledge of statistics beyond basic courses in fundamentals of probability and statistical inference. It serves as an ideal reference for professionals or as a textbook for graduate or advanced undergraduate students involved in statistics in the social sciences.
