Principles of Data Mining (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning) Review

Principles of Data Mining (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is not an introductory text. Anyone interested in a particular topic should consult the preface of the text to find out what it is about. The negative reviewers were not fair to the authors on that score. Had they read the preface they would have found out (1) how the authors define data mining, (2) that they see it as a subject with an important mix of statistical methodology and computer science and (3) that it is intended as an advanced undergraduate or first year graduate text on the topic.
They also provide a very well organized structure for the text that is well described in the preface. It consists of three parts. Chapter 1 is an essential introduction that is informative to everyone. Chapters 2 through 4 go through basic statistical ideas that statisticians would be very familiar with and others could view as a refresher. The authors have experience teaching this course to engineering and science majors and have found that many of these students unfortunately do not have the prerequisite statistical inference ideas and need this material covered in the course.
Chapters 5 through 8 cover the components of data mining algorithms and the remaining chapters deal with the details of the tasks and algorithms.
The book features a further reading section at the end of each chapter that provides a very nice guide to the useful and most significant relevant literature. The author's have done a very good job at this. One mistake I found was a reference to Miller (1980). I think this was intended to be a reference to the seocnd edition fo Rupert Miller's text "Simultaneous Statistical Inference" which was published in 1981 by Springer-Verlag but the full citation is missing from the list of references in the back of the book.
This book deserves 5 stars because it does what it intends to do. It presents the field of data mining in a clear way covering topics on classfication and kernel methods expertly. David Hand has published a great deal on these techniques including many fine books.
Mannila and Smyth bring to the text the computer science perspective. There is much useful material on optimization methods and computational complexity.
Statistical modeling and issues of the "curse of dimensionality" and the "overfitting problem" are key issues that this text emphasizes and expertly addresses.
The only thing the text misses is details on specific algorithms. But I do not grade them down for that because it was not their intention. They emphasize methodology and issues and that is the most critical thing a practitioner needs to know first before embarking on his own attack at mining data.
The text does provide most of the current important methods. Although Vapnik's work is mentioned and his two books are referenced there is very little discussion of support vector machines and the use of Vapnik-Chervonenkis classes and dimension in data mining. The new book by Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman goes into much greater detail on specific algorithms include some only briefly discussed in this text (e.g. support vector machines). The support vector approach is also nicely treated in "Learning with Kernels" by Scholkopf and Smola.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in data mining. It is a great reference source and an eloquent text to remind you of the pitfalls of thoughtless mining or "data-dredging". It also has many nice practical examples and some interesting success stories on the application of data mining to specific problems.

The growing interest in data mining is motivated by a common problem across disciplines: how does one store, access, model, and ultimately describe and understand very large data sets? Historically, different aspects of data mining have been addressed independently by different disciplines. This is the first truly interdisciplinary text on data mining, blending the contributions of information science, computer science, and statistics. The book consists of three sections. The first, foundations, provides a tutorial overview of the principles underlying data mining algorithms and their application. The presentation emphasizes intuition rather than rigor. The second section, data mining algorithms, shows how algorithms are constructed to solve specific problems in a principled manner. The algorithms covered include trees and rules for classification and regression, association rules, belief networks, classical statistical models, nonlinear models such as neural networks, and local "memory-based" models. The third section shows how all of the preceding analysis fits together when applied to real-world data mining problems. Topics include the role of metadata, how to handle missing data, and data preprocessing.

Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education (Josse Bass Higher and Adult Education) Review

Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education (Josse Bass Higher and Adult Education)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education, by William E. Sedlacek, provides a method of admitting students to higher education based on well-researched noncognitive variables that predict success as well as, or better than, traditional standardized tests of academic achievement. For anyone who values diversity in higher education, this book is a "must-read."
Proceeding from the belief that "current assessment[s]...measure limited kinds of abilities and potentials for limited groups" and that "traditional tests do not give us information on a range of attributes that are crucial to those who have not been socialized in traditional ways" (p. 141), Sedlacek argues that there are many variables that can predict success in academia beyond standard testing, and engages the reader in his discussion. In Beyond the Big Test... Sedlacek offers a viable alternative to (perhaps "addition to" is more appropriate) current admissions standards that are based solely on scores on standardized tests of academic knowledge.
This is an excellent resource on a timely topic. It is well-researched, theoretically sound, and easy to understand. Additionally, it provides a means of conducting noncognitive assessment via an assortment of normed questionnaires anyone should be able to implement.
Sedlacek is clearly more interested in making this information available to everyone than he is in lining his own pockets, since all the information needed to implement this system is included in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who values diversity and is seeking an equitable process of admitting students to higher education.

William E. Sedlacek--one of the nation’s leading authorities on the topic of noncognitive assessment--challenges the use of the SAT and other standardized tests as the sole assessment tool for college and university admissions. In Beyond the Big Test, Sedlacek presents a noncognitive assessment method that can be used in concert with the standardized tests. This assessment measures what students know by evaluating what they can do and how they deal with a wide range of problems in different contexts. Beyond the Big Test is filled with examples of assessment tools and illustrative case studies that clearly show how educators have used this innovative method to
Select a class diverse on dimensions of race, gender, and culture in a practical, legal, and ethical way
Teach a diverse class employing techniques that reach all students
Counsel and advise students in ways that consider their culture, race, and gender
Award financial aid to students with potential who do not necessarily have the highest grades and test scores
Assess the readiness of an institution to educate and provide services for a diverse student body

A Course in Econometrics Review

A Course in Econometrics
Average Reviews:

This textbook for advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students leads the reader through the basic concepts and statistical procedures of econometrics. The extensive use of matrix notation allows the reader to easily apply Goldberger's formulae to actual data (especially with computer packages such as Gauss and Matlab). Although the author gives brief treatments which sometimes require several readings to be fully understood, he is by no means unclear or confusing. Quite the contrary, as the book is very concise. Sections which I found especially useful and interesting were: 22.5 Statistical versus Economic Significance, 23 Multicollinearity (actually humorous!), and 24 Regression Strategies.

This text prepares first-year graduate students and advanced undergraduates for empirical research in economics, and also equips them for specialization in econometric theory, business, and sociology.

A Course in Econometrics is likely to be the text most thoroughly attuned to the needs of your students. Derived from the course taught by Arthur S. Goldberger at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at Stanford University, it is specifically designed for use over two semesters, offers students the most thorough grounding in introductory statistical inference, and offers a substantial amount of interpretive material. The text brims with insights, strikes a balance between rigor and intuition, and provokes students to form their own critical opinions.

A Course in Econometrics thoroughly covers the fundamentals—classical regression and simultaneous equations—and offers clear and logical explorations of asymptotic theory and nonlinear regression. To accommodate students with various levels of preparation, the text opens with a thorough review of statistical concepts and methods, then proceeds to the regression model and its variants. Bold subheadings introduce and highlight key concepts throughout each chapter.

Each chapter concludes with a set of exercises specifically designed to reinforce and extend the material covered. Many of the exercises include real micro-data analyses, and all are ideally suited to use as homework and test questions.

Principal Component Analysis (Springer Series in Statistics)

The first edition of this book was the most authoritative book on this subject 15 years ago. Now the author has provided us with a much-needed second edition since there are many developments since. Principal components related techniques are the main dimension-reduction methods in analysis of multivariate data. Since there is much redundancy with high throughput measurements such as spatial, spectra, or image data, thus the need to compress or decompose data. Related but somewhat different techniques include SVD, singular spectrum analysis (SSA0, PC regression, shrinkage, EoF, etc.
Main consumers of PCA-related methods include chemometrics, climate analysis, and image analysis A very nice book in the
area of climate analysis is Principal Component Analysis in Meteorology and Oceanography (Developments in Atmospheric Sciences).
The area of SSA has been developing fast and several
monographs have appeared already, e.g. Analysis of Time Series Structure: SSA and Related Techniques. The area of indpedent component analysis is another one that has attracted increasing
attention in recent years, Independent Component Analysis. Most of these recent developments have been covered and more. With this, I strongly recommend this book for readers who use multivariate analysis extensively and who need to keep abreast of the fast growing PCA tools which are as important as ever!

Sprawl, Justice, and Citizenship: The Civic Costs of the American Way of Life Review

Sprawl, Justice, and Citizenship: The Civic Costs of the American Way of Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book makes two intertwined arguments: one suggesting that sprawl may be good for suburbanites (based on a survey of 30,000 Americans living in a wide variety of places) and another suggesting that even if sprawl is good for suburbanites, it might not be good for society as a whole.
The survey data addresses three clusters of issues: overall happiness, social trust, and political engagement. As to the first, residents of low-density, vehicle-dependent suburbs appear to have higher self-reported levels of happiness than urbanites (not surprisingly given that many urbanites live in crime-ridden, low-income neighborhoods). But when affluence and a variety of other factors are controlled for, this relationship disappears (at least according to Williamson). On the other hand, suburbanites trust their neighbors more than urbanites even when affluence is controlled for. But this claim, even if true, doesn't prove very much. It seems to me quite natural that residents of socially homogenous suburbs will trust each other more than residents of more diverse urban environments. But is this higher level of trust balanced out by lower levels of trust towards people of different races/classes/neighborhoods? If so, suburbanites are not as well off as Williamson thinks. Finally, the survey addresses political participation: although suburbanites vote as often as urbanites, they are less likely (controlling for affluence, etc.) to engage in higher-intensity political participation.
Williamson's use of surveys, though quite interesting, suffers from one significant defect: although he provides readers with regression tables, he does not explain his raw data in terms accessible to nonprofessionals. What does it mean, for example, that factor X has a .209 relationship with political participation, while factor Y has a .594 relationship? Perhaps because Williamson assumed he was writing for an audience of political scientists, he does not explain these issues in any way that I could understand.
He then addresses the justice of sprawl, primarily (though not solely) from two points of view: leftist egalitarianism and civic republicanism. From an egalitarian perspective, one's opportunities should not be affected by accidents of geography. Thus, sprawl is unjust because it reduces the level of opportunities open to carless city residents, who live far away from new suburban jobs, cannot reach those jobs due to inadequate public transit, and have worse public services because they live in cities with no tax base. And because residents of sprawl tend to be less supportive of redistributionist politics, sprawl ensures that these problems will never be remedied. (Williamson should have addressed whether city/suburb mergers, such as Jacksonville's annexation of hundreds of square miles of suburbia, remedy these defects).
Williamson is more interested in civic republicanism - the theory that political participation in itself makes us more fully human. From this perspective, sprawl fails because residents of sprawl tend to be less politically involved.
But Williamson's views are unlikely to be persuasive to anybody to the right of, say, Dennis Kucinich. Most Americans mix libertarianism and utilitarianism, and thus are unlikely to place either equal opportunity or political participation as among their highest priorities.

Must the strip mall and the eight-lane highway define 21st century American life? That is a central question posed by critics of suburban and exurban living in America. Yet despite the ubiquity of the critique, it never sticks--Americans by the scores of millions have willingly moved into sprawling developments over the past few decades. Americans find many of the more substantial criticisms of sprawl easy to ignore because they often come across as snobbish in tone. Yet as Thad Williamson explains, sprawl does create real, measurable social problems. Williamson's work is unique in two important ways. First, while he highlights the deleterious effects of sprawl on civic life in America, he is also evenhanded. He does not dismiss the pastoral, homeowning ideal that is at the root of sprawl, and is sympathetic to the vast numbers of Americans who very clearly prefer it. Secondly, his critique is neither aesthetic nor moralistic in tone, but based on social science. Utilizing a landmark 30,000-person survey, he shows that sprawl fosters civic disengagement, accentuates inequality, and negatively impacts the environment. Sprawl, Justice, and Citizenship will not only be the most comprehensive work in print on the subject, it will be the first to offer a empirically rigorous critique of the most popular form of living in America today.

Are Americans less prejudiced now than they were thirty years ago, or has racism simply gone "underground"? Is racism something we learn as children, or is it a result of certain social groups striving to maintain their privileged positions in society? In Racialized Politics, political scientists, sociologists, and psychologists explore the current debate surrounding the sources of racism in America. Published here for the first time, the essays represent three major approaches to the topic. The social psychological approach maintains that prejudice socialized early in life feeds racial stereotypes, while the social structural viewpoint argues that behavior is shaped by whites' fear of losing their privileged status. The third perspective looks to non-racially inspired ideology, including attitudes about the size and role of government, as the reason for opposition to policies such as affirmative action. Timely and important, this collection provides a state-of-the-field assessment of the current issues and findings on the role of racism in mass politics and public opinion. I have known Dr. Aguinis's works from a large number of citations found in the leading publications, such as Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Journal of International Business Studies, etc. During my practice and academc research in international marketing for Taiwan's technology industry, I found Dr. Aguinis's work is one of the most practical, concise, and heuristic reference. The citations in this book is conprensive and detail enough for academic publication. Exploring, interpretation, and research designing of interactions between categorical variables have been done for past decades. However, Aguinis's insightful and revolutionary research has provided a comprehensive landmark for the art of interactions between continuous variables since Aiken and West(1991) and Cohen (2003). Interestly, it is a remarkedly guiding star in the "minefield" and "fishing expedition" in the research and practice for international business and psychology studies. Some fundamental asioms which are frequently ignored and violated by researchers and practitioners are pretty heurisc as an abecedarian for newcomers and even veteran academicians.
The quotations in the beginning of each chapter of Regression Analysis for Categorical Moderators. I read it from cover to cover.
Indeed, Dr. Aguinis has made the term, "moderator," into a beautiful thing.
"There is no statistical technique that can substitute for good thinking."
"No research design or dara analysis considerations will be able to compensate for the lack of good logic and theory."
Besides, this concise volume provides a detailed citations and conprehensive name index, which also made this book very suitable for academic authors.

There are a lot of people out there who do statistical analysis but who do not possess the mathematical knowledge underpinning a lot of what they are doing (i.e., linear algebra and some calculus). Most of the time people can get away with using stastical software as a sort of 'black box' and not worry about the math. But there are situations when having the background knowledge is crucial.
This book does an excellent job of facilitating self-study of the math underpinning multivariate statistical analysis ... namely, linear (matrix) algebra and some calculus. Each chapter has a set of questions and ALL of the answers are provided in the book (handy for self-study). The one slight critique of this book I can give is that I wish the book did more on the calculus aspects. However, that is a minor comment and the knowledge that this book imparts of linear algebra to self-learners is extremely valuable.
