(More customer reviews)I agree mostly with the other reviewers to say that this book is useful to some
extent for its brief review of molecular simulation and more so for the chapter
on object oriented programing.
However, I am really annoyed by the bad job done on the actual C++ example
code. While the class structure done in UML seems OK, the actual code is of a
very bad style and very misleading. I object to the fact that the code is still far
too procedural and encapsulation and information hiding have not really been
used at all. I found this really misleading, since I wanted to use the code and adapt
it to my own needs. There are some pretty dodgy style conventions also, such as
the inclusion of header files in header files, inconsistent class structure.
Beginners beware and keep a proper C++ for scientists and engineers book
on the side.

Part of the reason has been the sheer diversity of what or who are called Latinos in this country. The chapters in the book reflect this diversity. One chapter concerns Puerto Rican and Dominican gangsters in an urban environment. While another chapter compares African American and Cuban American teenagers. And another restricts its purview to Mexicans and Mexican Americans.
The tone is generally optimistic. Though the discussion on the spread of AIDS/HIV within the Latino groups can be chilling to some readers. The general lack of knowledge about how AIDS can spread, and a widespread mindset of denial about one's chances of getting it contribute to deepening inroads of AIDS. This is not to trivialise or ignore the threads in the book about narcotics abuse, and the latter can certainly lead to fatalities. But AIDS really shines through as the main danger.

However, this book cannot be the "only" book in your library if you are planning to go deep in SEM. This book is a good step for moving to intermediate or advanced levels.
The book is well desinged. It starts with fundamentals of SEM and EQS and LISREL programs. This book is NOT an EQS or LISREL reference, however, in each chapter, Raykov and Marcoulides cover an example showing the syntax and output of each program. The syntax and the output are deeply explained.
After introducing SEM and EQS and LISREL, the authors start to cover different approaches in SEM. Path analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Structural Regression Models and finally there is chapter about Latent Change Analysis.
In overall, the book is useful for only beginners as the authors' claim.

It is very easy to read, explains how to do various statistical operations in SPSS and how to interpret them. I came across a few errors, though, but they were minor and I highly recommend this book!

Black Feminist Voices in Politics Review

(More customer reviews)Black Feminist Voices in Politics appears to be a book written based on a dissertation, which is a technical education document of public policy. The author is concerned that the political process recognized male or white female voices on feminism, but although there are some black females who would qualify, nothing of substance is attributed to them. The greatest benefit is to identify a sub-culture. But that point was missed or just wasn't her focus.
The real problem is that there is no such thing as Black Feminism. Black women ascribe to a philosophy that is greater than the tenants of Feminism. The author operationalizes some means of making hypotheses that just doesn't work for me. For example, economically "women" would have to be employed with a telephone to qualify as well as a registered voter, active in the political process. That disqualifies too many, especially since many black women have cell phones but no home phone. Many black women are unemployed, by choice.
Every time I think about the author seriously, I get upset but she wrote what would be accepted. This is a technical read. Maybe political scientists would benefit from it, but other social scientists would take serious issue with it. The attempt was good, but the author concedes the literature research on this topic is famished. Also, the title is too strong for its content.

(More customer reviews)I liked this book a lot. It is a concise, thoughtful, and meticulously researched book that examines the causes and consequences of preteen homicide. It not only looks at traditional psychological factors, but expands the scope of the discussion to include moral reasoning and other sociological considerations. Geared towards a professional audience, though an educated lay person can get a lot from the book as well. A must read for anyone studying juvenile violence.

Due to the extensive changes in family structure such as the increase of single parent families, a high divorce rate, and the decline of the extended family, support systems for young children are in decline. This decline disrupts the support systems' ability to shape children's prosocial values. Because of the fear of lawsuits and limited financial resources, community services and schools no longer provide the framework needed to balance changes in the contemporary family structure. This book provides insight into voids that have created social skills affecting this young population using an integrative approach to examine the casual factors of violent behavior in preteens.
