Public Policy and Statistics: Case Studies from RAND (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences) Review

Public Policy and Statistics: Case Studies from RAND (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sally Morton and John Rolph edited and contributed to this collection of case studies of public policy issues that were conducted by the Economics and Statistics Group at the RAND Corporation. Sally is the current head of the group and John is a former head who is now a department chairman at the University of Southern California. The statistics group at RAND has a celebrated history for excellent and unbiased analyses of public policy data. As an organization they have existed since 1976 but individuals from the group had an impact even early. For example, Bill Rogers was part of the famous Princeton robustness study (published in 1972) while he was employed at RAND.
Many of the leaders of this group have participated in writing these studies including several who have moved on to careers elsewhere (e.g. Bob Bell, now at AT&T Labs - Research; John Rolph, now at USC; Jim Hodges, now at University of Minnesota; and Carl Morris, now at Harvard University).
Those currently at RAND who have contributed include Allan Abrahamse, John Adams, Phyllis Ellickson, Lionel Galway, Catherine Jackson, Dan McCaffrey, Sally Morton and Dan Relles. This is a mix of very seasoned RAND statisticians along with some junior members and colleagues. Several members of the group did not contribute to the case studies but well could have. I was particularly surprised at the absence of Naihua Duan who is an ASA fellow and has contributed to major health studies at RAND. Naihua has also been responsible for innovations while at RAND including contributions to sliced inverse regression and transformation "smearing" methods.
Nevertheless, the collection of studies are both interesting and important to the public and in several cases the findings go counter to the popular information in the media. Well-known Stanford Statistics Professor Brad Efron calls the media statements "misinformation" and "disinformation" and claims that RAND gets it right in his foreward to the book. Many Stanford students and colleagues of Efron had careers at RAND including Bob Bell, Naihua Duan, Carl Morris, Bill Rogers and Sally Morton.
There are a total of 10 case studies included. The first three are categorized as primarily addressing the collection of data (addressing issues in the design phase). The next three are considered to be primarily addressing the detection of effects (estimation or hypothesis testing aspects of statistical analysis) and the last four are considered to emphasize the understanding of relationships.
I have skimmed through all ten case studies and have read case numbers 3, 4, 5 and 7 in detail. The topics are as follows: 1. School-Based Drug Prevention by Bell and Ellickson. 2. The Health Insurance Experiment by Morris and Hill. 3. Counting the Homeless by Abrahamse. 4. Periodicity in the Global Mean Temperature Series? by Adams, Hammitt and Hodges. 5. Racial Bias in Death Sentencing by Morton and Rolph. 6. Malpractice and the Impaired Physician by McGuigan and Rolph. 7. Supply Delays for F-14 Jet Engine Repair Parts by Galway. 8. Hospital Mortality Rates by Thomas and Rolph. 9. Eye-Care Supply and Need by Relles, Jackson and Lee. 10. Modeling Block Grant Formulas for Substance Abuse Treatment by McCaffrey and Adams.
Analysis in #3 indicates that there are only about 400 homeless in Orange County as opposed to public estimates and claims of 4000 or more. Results in #4 indicate that the data are inconclusive regarding a global warming effect. In #5 both logistic regression and tree classification methods are used to show no clear bias in death sentencing based on the race of the victim. In #7 careful analysis of the data reveal that transporting supplies is the key factor in delays for getting repair parts for the engines and not the slow procurement process.
As an applied statistician who does a fair amount of consulting, I always find good case studies to be enlightening and helpful to me in my practice of statistics. These articles are very good and enlightening and they follow a common format. They start with an executive summary that provides an overview and the bottom line results. This is followed by an introductory section and then a section describing the study design, data collection, data sources and elements. The third section deals with datafile creation, descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis. The fourth section covers statistical methods and models used. The fifth section gives results. Section 6 is a discussion section which may include summary, possible future extensions of the analysis, and conclusion and recommendations. The final section provides exercises. This last section is excellent for a course based on the case studies as it tests the student knowledge based on material learned in the case study. Sometimes self-contained problems are given but in other cases the reader is referred to the casebook web page at the RAND web site where data sources can be found to do the exercises.
In practical work I have always found that a clear understanding of the problem and good descriptive statistics and/or graphics are far more important than the particular method of analysis (which

The Image Of God And The Psychology Of Religion Review

The Image Of God And The Psychology Of Religion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Clinicians who work with religious clientele often hear narratives about the part that God plays in clients' lives. This emotional role that God plays is known as the God image. Sometimes God is more central, other times at the periphery, but usually important. Clinicians often want to address this area in treatment, but they have few resources available to help them make sense of clients' God images.
Richard Dayringer and David Oler have compiled a compendium of works to help shed light on God image work. The majority of the book is comprised of interesting empirical studies. Two chapters explore the largely unchartered territory of the God image and severe mental illness. Another study addresses gender role identity and the God image. A fourth empirical contribution discusses the formation of adolescents' God images. The other chapters are smart, philosophical, reviews of the God image construct that have implications for pastoral counseling and other forms of clinical work.
A central theme that runs loosely through The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion is an openness to understanding the different ways of experiencing God. Authors are careful to not limit the experience of God to any one tradition. Similarly, they advocate closely following the client's own understanding of God as a resource in pastoral counseling. This flexibility takes place in the context of larger theoretical frameworks. Several chapters provide ways of making sense of and conceptualizing the God image. Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches are clearly described with a particular emphasis on projection theory and object relations. Similarly, attachment theory is discussed and empirically evaluated. Finally, behavioral or socialization theories along with cognitive consistency paradigms are also covered.
One limitation of The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion is that some of the chapters are loosely connected to one another. This is often a complaint of compilation works and maybe even more so of this work because it was co-published as a special series in the American Journal of Pastoral Counseling, Volume 7, November 2004. Regardless, however, the editors were clear that their intention was to provide a variety of voices and perspectives - some of which more closely relate to certain contributions than others.
Overall, however, Dayringer and Oler have provided a welcome addition to the God image literature. The contributors have covered fresh ground and added to other areas that were only lightly explored. Readers will find empirical support to help them better understand how certain populations understand and experience God. They will also find rich narratives that capture the complexities of God image work.

What are the implications of a client's image of God?Improve your confidence—and your practice skills—by enhancing your knowledge of how individuals are likely to perceive God, and of how those perceptions impact the way they function as human beings. Theologians have long speculated and theorized about how humans imagine God to be. This book merges theology with science, presenting empirical research focused on perceptions of God in a variety of populations living in community and mental health settings. Each chapter concludes with references that comprise an essential reading list, and the book is generously enhanced with tables that make data easy to access and understand."Liberating Images of God" discusses the constriction and impoverishment of God images due to the traditional restrictions of God images to those that are male and personified. This chapter examines the potential for the client and counselor's co-creation of images of God which embrace the feminine as well as the masculine, the nurturer as well as the warrior, and the natural world in all its dimensions as well as the human world, to liberate, enrich, sustain, and transform the client's relationships with God and with him/herself."Attachment, Well-Being, and Religious Participation Among People with Severe Mental Disorders" examines the relationship between attachment states of mind and religious participation among people diagnosed with severe mental illness. "Concepts of God and Therapeutic Alliance Among People with Severe Mental Disorders" explores the transferential aspects of God representation among severely mentally ill adults. It highlights research on the relationship between a patient's image of God and that patient's working relationship with his/her case manager, and discusses the implications for clinical practice of those findings."The Subjective Experience of God" presents a theory about the psychological basis for the experience of God that argues that this experience is essentially a form of projection and as such is an internal event that does not exist independent of an individual's psyche. This chapter draws a distinction between faith in a particular belief—namely, faith in the existence of a loving, omnipotent God—and an attitude of faith, which is the basis for experiences of transcendence. "Relationship of Gender Role Identity and Attitudes" presents the results of a study in which nearly 300 Catholic attendees at three university Catholic centers completed the Bern Sex Role Inventory, the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, and the Perceptions of God Checklist. This chapter looks at images of God as masculine or feminine, and at the connection for people between the way they perceive God and the way they relate towards men and women."Reflections on a Study in a Mental Hospital," brings you groundbreaking new research on perceptions of God in an inpatient population. This chapter examines the positive effects (as opposed to the negative effects previously portrayed by the psychological community) of religious belief and practice for residential care patients in a psychiatric hospital.

This is one of a series of books Dennis Cook has written on regression graphics. This is the most theoretical of the three. It is a companion to the recent book with Sandy Weisberg. The other book emphasizes applications while this provides some theory to support a complete regression analysis through graphical methods. It provides a modern and up-to-date treatment. This work was summarized in a recent tutorial I attended that Cook gave at the Deming Conference last year. It includes several examples and covers asymptotic theory for such topics as sliced inverse regression. It is a great reference source also.

Despite the importance of individual assessment in terms of organizational consulting practices, very few books cover this topic. As such, this book fills a definite need and does an great job of covering the topic for the professional reader or student. I used this book as recommended reading for a summer graduate course. In a short book, the authors manage to cover most of the important topics in sufficient detail so as to serve as a resource for those entering the field or getting their first job in individual assessment. If there are future editions, I would hope the authors would expand their coverage of developmental uses and of feedback.

The Paradox of Predictivism Review

The Paradox of Predictivism
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent discussion of the topic. Prediction is essential for science. An unpredicted result can be interpreted to fit any theory. Accurate prediction supports a particular theory. The paradox appears to be the ability to predict based on limited knowledge, as with Mendeleev predicting missing elements with little or no understanding of protons. The author supposes additional credibility from prediction rather than results interpreted to fit a theory. A modern application might be the theory of evolution that predicts both the natural rise of life from non-life and the natural rise of complexity from simple life. Astrophysical evolution also predicts the formation of galaxies and solar systems from a "big bang." What is predicted and what is observed? This is the essence of the scientific method.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Paradox of Predictivism

An enduring question in the philosophy of science is the question of whether a scientific theory deserves more credit for its successful predictions than it does for accommodating data that was already known when the theory was developed. In The Paradox of Predictivism, Eric Barnes argues that the successful prediction of evidence testifies to the general credibility of the predictor in a way that evidence does not when the evidence is used in the process of endorsing the theory. He illustrates his argument with an important episode from nineteenth-century chemistry, Mendeleev's Periodic Law and its successful predictions of the existence of various elements. The consequences of this account of predictivism for the realist/anti-realist debate are considerable, and strengthen the status of the 'no miracle' argument for scientific realism. Barnes's important and original contribution to the debate will interest a wide range of readers in philosophy of science.

This is an excellent compiliation. It brings one up to date on what is currently known about many psychosocial factors in pain. The one drawback is that the issue of pain as a desired stimulus (as in the case of self-mutilation, passive algolagnia, and certain religious ceremonies) is never addressed. I personally feel that this is major drawback to the book. Nevertheless this is one of the best books on the subject to date, and is an excellent resource for anyone studying pain.

This unique book introduces neural network and kernel methods to students and practitioners in the environmental sciences. It will probably be of most use to meteorologists and climatologists, as its treatment of nonlinear extensions of linear multivariate techniques such as principal component analysis, canonical correlation analysis, singular spectrum analysis, etc. -- methods that are commonly applied to large gridded datasets -- is excellent. Sections on probabilistic methods such as mixture density networks and Gaussian processes are also a welcome addition. Highly recommended.

Machine learning methods originated from artificial intelligence and are now used in various fields in environmental sciences today. This is the first single-authored textbook providing a unified treatment of machine learning methods and their applications in the environmental sciences. Due to their powerful nonlinear modeling capability, machine learning methods today are used in satellite data processing, general circulation models(GCM), weather and climate prediction, air quality forecasting, analysis and modeling of environmental data, oceanographic and hydrological forecasting, ecological modeling, and monitoring of snow, ice and forests. The book includes end-of-chapter review questions and an appendix listing web sites for downloading computer code and data sources. A resources website containing datasets for exercises, and password-protected solutions are available. The book is suitable for first-year graduate students and advanced undergraduates. It is also valuable for researchers and practitioners in environmental sciences interested in applying these new methods to their own work.Preface ExcerptMachine learning is a major subfield in computational intelligence (also called artificial intelligence). Its main objective is to use computational methods to extract information from data. Neural network methods, generally regarded as forming the first wave of breakthrough in machine learning, became popular in the late 1980s, while kernel methods arrived in a second wave in the second half of the 1990s. This is the first single-authored textbook to give a unified treatment of machine learning methods and their applications in the environmental sciences.Machine learning methods began to infiltrate the environmental sciences in the 1990s. Today, thanks to their powerful nonlinear modeling capability, they are no longer an exotic fringe species, as they are heavily used in satellite data processing, in general circulation models (GCM), in weather and climate prediction, air quality forecasting, analysis and modeling of environmental data, oceanographic and hydrological forecasting, ecological modeling, and in the monitoring of snow, ice and forests, etc. This book presents machine learning methods and their applications in the environmental sciences (including satellite remote sensing, atmospheric science, climate science, oceanography, hydrology and ecology), written at a level suitable for beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates. It is also valuable for researchers and practitioners in environmental sciences interested in applying these new methods to their own work.Chapters 1-3, intended mainly as background material for students, cover the standard statistical methods used in environmental sciences. The machine learning methods of chapters 4-12 provide powerful nonlinear generalizations for many of these standard linear statistical methods. End-of-chapter review questions are included, allowing readers to develop their problem-solving skills and monitor their understanding of the material presented. An appendix lists websites available for downloading computer code and data sources. A resources website is available containing datasets for exercises, and additional material to keep the book completely up-to-date.About the AuthorWILLIAM W. HSIEH is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as well as Chair of the Atmospheric Science Programme, at the University of British Columbia. He is internationally known for his pioneering work in developing and applying machine learning methods in environmental sciences. Focusing on data commonly found in public health databases and clinical settings, Bayesian Disease Mapping: Hierarchical Modeling in Spatial Epidemiology provides an overview of the main areas of Bayesian hierarchical modeling and its application to the geographical analysis of disease. The book explores a range of topics in Bayesian inference and modeling, including Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, Gibbs sampling, the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm, goodness-of-fit measures, and residual diagnostics. It also focuses on special topics, such as cluster detection; space-time modeling; and multivariate, survival, and longitudinal analyses. The author explains how to apply these methods to disease mapping using numerous real-world data sets pertaining to cancer, asthma, epilepsy, foot and mouth disease, influenza, and other diseases. In the appendices, he shows how R and WinBUGS can be useful tools in data manipulation and simulation. Applying Bayesian methods to the modeling of georeferenced health data, Bayesian Disease Mapping proves that the application of these approaches to biostatistical problems can yield important insights into data.

A most comprehensive and very informative text concerning a subject all of us baby boomers should read. It is written primarily for the health care professional, but the editors did an excellent job when explaining topics currently problematic -- when considering atrial fib treatment options. I wish they would write volume two! The charts and drawings for illustrations could be cleaned up, but this is written so well, one will hardly notice. The book is referenced in extremely well written fashion, and should be recommended as an excellent source for AF in any library on the subject. They (the authors) go into great detail explaining results and possibilities of virtually every known study done, offering suggestions which for the most part are excellent. The general lay population can read this and appreciate the task they accomplished by writing on such a topic so difficult, yet lowering the diction to explain concepts which might seem a little selective. This is done by them correctly seeking the "rate" method of correcting the AFib in question which is much easier, yet of course, not a simple undergoing.Although, not a pleasant subject to discuss, atrial fibrillation is coming to the forefront of problems that anyone over 50 should consider as a subject one should know just a little more about. This book can do just that for all of us . guyairey

Well, it is now another presidential cycle since this book was written. And it covers the 2000 election. But perhaps that increases its relevance. The authors perform various statistical tests, applying numerous regression models. To study such aspects as party identification when evaluating candidates.
Please understand that the book does not take sides on any issue. The authors are not aligning with either party or candidate. Instead, there is a dispassionate focus at the efficacy of various analytical methods.

The 2000 presidential election was one of the closest and most dramatic elections in American history. Over the year 2000, the Annenberg Public Policy Center conducted the largest study ever undertaken of the American electorate--the National Annenberg Election Survey (NAES). Capturing Campaign Dynamics: The National Annenberg Election Survey: Design, Method, and Data presents the results of this survey to the general public for the first time. The book includes a CD-ROM of the NAES codebooks and data, featuring more than 100,000 interviews with adults living in the United States, which were conducted nearly every day throughout the year 2000. The data contained on the NAES CD-ROM are in both SPSS format and tab-delimited format for use with other statistical software. In addition, it is the first book to focus on rolling cross-sectional analysis, a relatively new and exciting survey research methodology. The book walks researchers through different strategies for analyzing rolling cross-sectional data to understand campaign dynamics. It also provides an introduction to time series analysis and other methods for exploiting this rich database. Capturing Campaign Dynamics: The National Annenberg Election Survey: Design, Method, and Data is ideal for courses in survey research methods in political science, communication studies, and analysis of public opinion. It will also be of great interest to scholars and professionals such as pollsters and political consultants.

The authors managed to include amazingly large amount of important material in this little handbook. The book covers a wide variety of statistical procedures. Perhaps the best review book out there. Great job.
