Molecular Simulation of Fluids Review

Molecular Simulation of Fluids
Average Reviews:

I agree mostly with the other reviewers to say that this book is useful to some
extent for its brief review of molecular simulation and more so for the chapter
on object oriented programing.
However, I am really annoyed by the bad job done on the actual C++ example
code. While the class structure done in UML seems OK, the actual code is of a
very bad style and very misleading. I object to the fact that the code is still far
too procedural and encapsulation and information hiding have not really been
used at all. I found this really misleading, since I wanted to use the code and adapt
it to my own needs. There are some pretty dodgy style conventions also, such as
the inclusion of header files in header files, inconsistent class structure.
Beginners beware and keep a proper C++ for scientists and engineers book
on the side.

Hardbound. Molecular simulation is being increasingly used to study a widening range of both molecular systems and fluid phenomena. Today, the goal of many simulators is to study complicated molecules such as proteins, whereas attention was formerly confined almost exclusively to simple atoms and molecules. Similarly, the simulation of phase equilibria is nowadays quite common. The impetus for the increasing use of molecular simulation can be attributed to many factors such as improvements in theory, algorithms, and computer hardware. These novel developments have generated enormous growth in the simulation literature. The aim of this book is to examine some of the important aspects of recent progress in the use of molecular simulation for investigating fluids. It encompasses both Monte Carlo and molecular dynamic techniques providing details of theory, algorithms and implementation. Details of new algorithms are described in pseudo code and the latest

Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research On Epidemiology, Prevention, And Treatment
Average Reviews:

In the US, research into substance abuse within an ethnic group has been rather sparse for Latinos. Part of the reason has been the sheer diversity of what or who are called Latinos in this country. The chapters in the book reflect this diversity. One chapter concerns Puerto Rican and Dominican gangsters in an urban environment. While another chapter compares African American and Cuban American teenagers. And another restricts its purview to Mexicans and Mexican Americans.
The tone is generally optimistic. Though the discussion on the spread of AIDS/HIV within the Latino groups can be chilling to some readers. The general lack of knowledge about how AIDS can spread, and a widespread mindset of denial about one's chances of getting it contribute to deepening inroads of AIDS. This is not to trivialise or ignore the threads in the book about narcotics abuse, and the latter can certainly lead to fatalities. But AIDS really shines through as the main danger.

Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment fills this void by presenting the latest research on the epidemic of substance abuse now afflicting the Latino community. Ethnic differences are reviewed, including specific studies covering gang members, low-income urban women, risky behaviors, and language preference indicators of acculturation. This book does more than simply present the research—it discusses effective treatment strategies to help practitioners provide quality, culturally competent care to lacking Latino populations. Latinos, the largest minority in the United States, have an increasing alcohol and illicit drug use problem. Culture, acculturation, and language hold powerful sway in the research of Latino/a substance abuse. Substance Abusing Latinos: Current Research on Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment delves deeply into troubling issues such as gang membership, sexual abuse, the lack of healthy family role models, the effects of different levels of acculturation, the lack of health insurance, and rampant involvement with the criminal system. Black Feminist Voices in Politics Review

Black Feminist Voices in Politics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Black Feminist Voices in Politics appears to be a book written based on a dissertation, which is a technical education document of public policy. The author is concerned that the political process recognized male or white female voices on feminism, but although there are some black females who would qualify, nothing of substance is attributed to them. The greatest benefit is to identify a sub-culture. But that point was missed or just wasn't her focus.
The real problem is that there is no such thing as Black Feminism. Black women ascribe to a philosophy that is greater than the tenants of Feminism. The author operationalizes some means of making hypotheses that just doesn't work for me. For example, economically "women" would have to be employed with a telephone to qualify as well as a registered voter, active in the political process. That disqualifies too many, especially since many black women have cell phones but no home phone. Many black women are unemployed, by choice.
Every time I think about the author seriously, I get upset but she wrote what would be accepted. This is a technical read. Maybe political scientists would benefit from it, but other social scientists would take serious issue with it. The attempt was good, but the author concedes the literature research on this topic is famished. Also, the title is too strong for its content.

I liked this book a lot. It is a concise, thoughtful, and meticulously researched book that examines the causes and consequences of preteen homicide. It not only looks at traditional psychological factors, but expands the scope of the discussion to include moral reasoning and other sociological considerations. Geared towards a professional audience, though an educated lay person can get a lot from the book as well. A must read for anyone studying juvenile violence.

Due to the extensive changes in family structure such as the increase of single parent families, a high divorce rate, and the decline of the extended family, support systems for young children are in decline. This decline disrupts the support systems' ability to shape children's prosocial values. Because of the fear of lawsuits and limited financial resources, community services and schools no longer provide the framework needed to balance changes in the contemporary family structure. This book provides insight into voids that have created social skills affecting this young population using an integrative approach to examine the casual factors of violent behavior in preteens. It offers suggestions for alleviating some of the causative factors that have created this nationwide problem.

This book is designed to give students the confidence to understand theoretically issues like reliability and validity and through calculator and statistical packages such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS, SAS, and EQS. Students are shown that they can easily find reliability and validity measures without mathematics. Once exposed to measurement concepts, research design is the next topic. With this area, the topic of variables are cover-dependent, dependent, moderator, control, suppressor, and intervening. Additionally, the concepts of interval and external validity are discussed, and research designs are covered such as one-group, two-group, multiple treatment, factorial, quasi-experimental, and nested designs. Measures of central tendency and variability are presented, and examples are connected to a calculator and the statistical packages. The general univariate statistics are examined such as t-tests, analysis of variance, simple regression, analysis of covariance, nest analysis of variance, and the univariate and multivariate approaches to repeated measures. Two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures on one factor are covered along with multivariate matched pairs analysis, totally within repeated measures designs, and doubly multivariate repeated measures. Multiple regression, structured coefficients within multiple regression, interaction effects within multiple regression, cross-validation within multiple regression, logistic regression, multivariate regression, multilevel re-gression, factorial analysis of variance and covariance, stepdown analysis, discriminant analysis, exploratory and factor analysis, structural equations modeling, canonical correlation, and loglinear analysis are discussed. The Use of Force by Detention Officers (Criminal Justice: Recent Scholarship)

Marie Griffin's study of the correlates of "readiness to use force" by jail correctional officers is an important contribution to this understudied area of inquiry. Her role as an evaluator of an NIJ sponsored project to introduce non-lethal weapons in the Maricopa County (AZ) Jail system gave her the opportunity to collect great data for the analysis of what factors contribute to a correctional officer's readiness to use force on a prisoner. The audience for this book is, for the most part, scholars who are concerned with prison policy and organizational development/industrial psychology issues (workplace satisfaction, climate, etc.) The statistical techniques, appropriate to the academic setting, will not be readily appreciated by most practitioners (including me). However, the conclusions (climate is more important than individual attributes in determining readiness to use force) should be of interest to policy makers and reform activists. Dr. Griffin demonstrates an admirable knowledge of the research literature in this area and provides a very helpful bibliography. Her calls for more research on use of force seem quite sincere. Hopefully more scholars will take up the challenge.
I borrowed a library copy. It is hard to justify the price for a personal library, although I'm tempted...If you're concerned about the use of force in jails in prisons this is an important book to read. Buy it if you can't find a library copy. REA

Griffin conducted a survey of all detention officers inMaricopa County, Arizona, a jail system known for punitive policiesand for a sheriff with a national reputation for severity. Griffin'sfindings indicate that attitudes toward the use force are influencedby authority, fear of victimization, quality of supervision, institutional operations, and role ambiguity. These findings suggestthat interactions between officers and supervisory personnel andinteractions directly with inmates have a more direct influence on theuse force than either perceptions of the larger organization or anofficer's individual characteristics.

The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift (Routledge Communication Series) Review

The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift (Routledge Communication Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For many decades, cultural imperialism paradigm has been used to explain the effects of international television on local viewers. Through this book Michael G. Elasmar along with other leading scholars challenge the use of cultural imperialism paradigm for explaining the effects of international television on domestic audiences through conducting a meta-analysis approach for both published and unpublished manuscripts that were introduced during the period of 1960 till January 1995.
More importantly, at this book, Elasmar introduces a new model that is called `Susceptibility to Imported Media' (SIM), which media researchers should put into consideration while studying the impact of cross boarder television.
Through the SIM model, Elasmar argues that prior information represented in knowledge, beliefs and attitudes about out groups; the perceived utility; and the involvement in content, are all pre existing schema that will determine how the T.V. content will be comprehended, retained and then recalled. Consequently, prior information will determine the type of effect that exposure to imported T.V. content will produce.
Furthermore, Elasmar introduced the idea of labeling the process of T.V. influence on viewers, which he called the Media-Accelerated Culture Diffusion (MACD). The core idea behind this label is based on his belief that cultures influence other cultures without the conspiracy claim behind the cultural imperialism paradigm. He stressed the idea of culture diffusion due to the existence of "a continuity of indirect causation from culture event to culture event through the medium of human intermediaries" (Page 173). Elasmar concluded his book by proposing an expanded research agenda for future studies.
The originality of this book is that it offers a new alternative paradigm and labeling for the explanation of the effects of international T.V. programs. This book will be of real benefit for scholars interested in the fields of cross-cultural communication, media effects studies and international communications. It is considered of paramount importance to media researchers, since it opens new scopes for future researchers to further the understanding of the roles of audio visual media in diffusing cultures.

For several decades, cultural imperialism has been the dominant paradigm for conceptualizing, labeling, predicting, and explaining the effects of international television. It has been used as an unchallenged premise for numerous essays on the topic of imported television influence, despite the fact that the assumption of strong cultural influence is not necessarily reflected in the body of research that exists within this field of study. In The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift, editor Michael G. Elasmar and his contributors challenge the dominant paradigm of cultural imperialism, and offer an alternative paradigm with which to evaluate international or crossborder message influence. In this volume, Elasmar has collected original research from leading scholars working in the area of crossborder media influence, and contributes his own meta-analysis to examine what research findings actually show on the influences of crossborder messages. The contributions included here illustrate points, such as: the contentions of cultural imperialism and the context in which its assumptions emerged and developed; the complexities of the relationship between exposure to foreign television and its subsequent effects on local audience members; the applicability of quantitative methods to a topic commonly tackled using argumentation, critical theory, and other qualitative approaches; and the difficulty of achieving strong and homogenous effects. In bringing together the work of independent researchers, The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift bridges over 40 years of research efforts focused on imported television influence, the results of which, as a whole, challenge the de facto strong and homogenous effects assumed by those who support the paradigm of cultural imperialism. The volume sets a theory-driven agenda of research and offers an alternative paradigm for the new generation of researchers interested in international media effects. As such, the volume is intended for scholars, researchers, and students in international and intercultural communication, cross-cultural communication, mass communication, media effects, media and society, and related areas. It will also be of great interest to academics in international relations, cross-cultural and social psychology, intergroup and international relations, international public opinion, and peace studies.

Although much of psychology involves a rather univariate approach, every once in a while a publication comes along that focuses on a multivariate explanation that recognizes the complexity and richness of human development. This is one such publication. Focusing on early substance abuse, the authors compare such development to a stream "meandering through a meadow", joined by other streams and gathering momentum, growing into a "rushing rapid that cascades over rocks", but with various deflections from rocks along the way (the "dynamic cascade"). The primary "streams" include biological factors, social ecology, early parenting, early peer relations, adolescent parenting, and adolescent peer relations, and although the "streams" individually result in modest effects, in combination they are very predictive, early influences are primary, adaptation is a continuous but a reciprocal transactional process, sensitive periods are important, and there are always opportunities for change. Although at times the statistical analysis of a significant amount of data can be a bit tedious, I was very impressed with this book, and think it represents a significant step forward in the understanding and potential prevention of early onset substance use. I recommend it highly!

This book covers comprehensive areas in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, such as, vocational choice, work motivation and satisfaction, and selection, to which how personality relates. Based mainly upon Eysenck's personality model, Dr, Furnham clearly depicts the richness of past empirical research in each field, venturing to generalize the causal model of personality and the results. Good for practitioners who cannot completely agree with the statement "Every employee's behavior is determined MOSTLY by situational factors," and further, essential for Graduate students interested in "dispositional approach." Personality at Work examines the increasingly controversial role of individual differences in predicting and determining behavior at work. Adrian Furnham asks whether psychological tests measuring personality traits can predict behavior at work, such as job satisfaction, productivity, absenteeism and turnover. A comprehensive review of the literature from psychology, sociology and management science, this book is the only exhaustive and incisive multidisciplinary work to assess the role of psychological testing in the management of the workplace. As such, this volume is an enormously useful resource for the researcher and practitioner, as well as for students of psychology, management science and sociology.
