I heard the author speak and decided to buy this book. It transcended my expectations. This is the richest book I have read on the mind-body relationship. It's erudite and scholarly but it is also readable and very engaging. You probably need to have some prior interest in the mind-body field or be professionally involved to fully enjoy what Dreher accomplishes here, he really delves into the science behind mind-body medicine. He concludes that the notion of a mind-body connection is too simplistic--mind and body are completely unified. He backs this up with the latest scientific discoveries on how the mind, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems are so intertwined. Every chapter and especially the second half of the book goes into the mind-body treatments that can best influence health, and here he makes some controversial arguments that deep psychotherapy, whether individual or group, may have a more profound impact on health than isolated mind-body practices like relaxation. This book will raise your consciousness about the mind-body relationship and keep you interested throughout by discussing all the controversies in the field and what they really mean for human beings suffering from psychological or physical ill-health. It certainly raised my consciousness.

Over the past twenty years, an explosion of scientific studies have helped toexplain why our state of mind may exert such a strong influence on the state of our health. InMind-Body Unity science writer Henry Dreher weighs the results of leading-edgemind-body research, and he concludes that mind and body are not merely connected, they areunified. Our minds play a role in health, Dreher argues, the way our eyes play a role in sight. Integrating biological research on mind-body unity with psychosocial research on emotions inhuman health, Dreher surveys remarkable findings on the role of emotions, coping, andpersonality in coronary heart disease; on psychosocial factors in cancer progression and survival;and on the social dimensions of human health. He also describes mind-body approaches to thetreatment of cancer, women's health conditions, somatization disorder, and in surgery. Finally,Dreher provides a critical overview of the social and political context of this research, from thepresentations of leading popularizers such as Bernie Siegel and Deepak Chopra, to theexperiences of practitioners and patients, to the resistance of mainstream medicine, to the manyexciting possibilities suggested by a deeper understanding of how mind and body are inextricablybound.
