Rex Kline easy writing style will take you through step-by-step in one of the most comprehesive yet accessible introductions to multivariate analysis and structural equation modeling. After outlining the building blocks of SEM (multiple regression, path analysis, and factor analysis), Kline gets the reader ready to tackle popular SEM software with examples for AMOS, LISREL and EQS. There is also a great chapter on what NOT to do with this often misused technique. For a preview, see Kline's article in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (1991), Latent variable path analysis: A beginner's tour guide. This book is an excellent read, and a must have for researchers and statisticians.

From power plants to sugar refining, model predictive control (MPC) schemes have established themselves as the preferred control strategies for a wide variety of processes. The second edition of Model Predictive Control provides a thorough introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of the most commonly used MPC strategies. It bridges the gap between the powerful but often abstract techniques of control researchers and the more empirical approach of practitioners. Model Predictive Control demonstrates that a powerful technique does not always require complex control algorithms. The text features material on the following subjects: general MPC elements and algorithms; commercial MPC schemes; generalized predictive control multivariable, robust, constrained and nonlinear MPC; fast methods for MPC implementation; applications. All of the material is thoroughly updated for the second edition with the chapters on nonlinear MPC and MPC implementation being entirely new. Many new exercises and examples have also have also been added throughout and Matlab(r) programs to aid in their solution can be downloaded from the authors' website at XYZ.edu.es. The text is an excellent aid for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and will also be of use to researchers and industrial practitioners wishing to keep abreast of a fast-moving field.

My cohort in an 2-year MS Stat program almost universally hated this text (of us all, I was probably the one least opposed to it). Hocking skipped too many steps for us ("It is easy to see ..."). He often takes a geometric approach, but presents it at a level that was incomprehensible to any of us (including our professor). I don't doubt Hocking knows what he was talking about, or even that some other readers might, but it was beyond all of us, many of whom as undergrads majored in math or statistics, for what that's worth.
For theory of the linear model, consider Rencher and Schaalje's Theory of the Linear Model, which is extremely thorough and clear, has solutions to all exercises, great for self-study It doesn't cover all the material that Hocking does, though.

An essential book for researchers and engineers working on vector quantization. It provides a (nearly) exhaustive description of the available VQ methods, with analyses and discussions. The book concentrates on VQ, so don't buy it if you're not interested in that only. Most math tools explained. Could be a little bit outdated on some aspects -> things are moving fast in the field.

This book is devoted to the theory and practice of signal compression; i.e. data compression applied to signals such as speech, audio, images and video signals. The emphasis is on the conversion of analog waveforms into efficient digital representations and on the compression of digital information into the fewest possible bits. Both operations should yield the highest possible reconstruction fidelity subject to constraints on the bit rate and implementation complexity. The conversion of signals into such efficient digital representations has several goals: to minimize the communication capacity required for transmission of high quality signals such as speech and images or, equivalently, to obtain the best possible fidelity over an available communication channel; to minimize the storage capacity required for saving such information in fast storage media and in archival data bases or, equivalently, to obtain the best possible quality for the largest amount of information stored in a given medium; to provide the simplest possible accurate descriptions of a signal so as to minimize the subsequent complexity of signal processing algorithms such as classification, transformation and encryption. In addition to these common goals of communication, storage, and signal processing systems, efficient coding of both analog and digital information is intimately connected to a variety of other fields such as pattern recognition, image classification, speech recognition, cluster analysis regression, and decision tree design. Thus techniques from each field can often be extended to another and combined signal processing operations can take advantage of the similar algorithm structures and designs. This book has been written for use in a graduate course on quantization and signal compression and represents the most comprehensive reference available for research scientists and practitioners working in fields related to the topic.

I've been a meteorologist for 20 years. Trained by Dr Bill Gray, I've walked in the eye of three hurricanes and flown in they eye of one. One recent book interest has been adventure stories including THE PERFECT STORM, INTO THIN AIR, ENDURANCE, etc. I had shyed away from ISSAC'S STORM because I couldn't imagine what Larson could tell me I didn't already know about the 1900 disaster at Galveston. I shouldn't have waited. Even the most seasoned weather geek will learn from this book. Like Carl Sagan, Larson has a knack for putting complex concepts in layman terms. I took away new simple descriptions of tropical meteorological concepts. However, that is not the genius of this book. Erik Larson did a wonderful job piecing together thousands of bits of information and crafting it all into a gripping read. What's missing? Photographs. Like SHIP OF GOLD IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA, this book is screaming for a companion book of photos. Eric said he waded through over 4,000; 250 of the best would make a super addition to this treatise. Linear Models: Least Squares and Alternatives (Springer Series in Statistics) Review

Linear Models: Least Squares and Alternatives (Springer Series in Statistics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently got a copy of this book (first edition). While I try to look up some result I need at hand (obviously I find it, the most general and accurate answer, a typical use of Rao's book such as his other classic linear inference book), I find myself digging deeper and deeper into other places of the book. While linear model books and courses are typically boring and contain little new, I find all the new and deep results everywhere in this book, and it's a joy and refreshing experience. For example, the discussion of generalized linear model in the context of heteroscedastic linear model is very natural. The chapter on linear and stochastic constraints is a must read for anybody deals with high-dimensional and complex data. The prediction theory is very novel and general. After closing this book, I'm thinking what more can be said about linear models. Obviously they are useful, not obsolete or unrealistic as being often misconceived. The morale is use in proper context and wariness against violations of model assumptions. There are plenty of tests and remedies in this book for the latter. A modern view is that many nonlinear methods can be treated as extensions of linear models such as nonparametric regression (linear smoothers and local polynomial method), neural networks, etc. and the second edition of this book has added substantial materials in this regard. In all, I recomend this book as an excellent textbook for a seond course on linear models, a must read for researchers dealing with some aspects of linear models, and a must-have reference for anyone who needs to check up the most complete and updated results on linear models.

This book provides an up-to-date account of the theory and applications of linear models. It can be used as a text for courses in statistics at the graduate level as well as an accompanying text for other courses in which linear models play a part. The authors present a unified theory of inference from linear models with minimal assumptions, not only through least squares theory, but also using alternative methods of estimation and testing based on convex loss functions and general estimating equations. Some of the highlights include: - a special emphasis on sensitivity analysis and model selection; - a chapter devoted to the analysis of categorical data based on logit, loglinear, and logistic regression models; - a chapter devoted to incomplete data sets; - an extensive appendix on matrix theory, useful to researchers in econometrics, engineering, and optimization theory; - a chapter devoted to the analysis of categorical data based on a unified presentation of generalized linear models including GEE- methods for correlated response; - a chapter devoted to incomplete data sets including regression diagnostics to identify Non-MCAR-processes The material covered will be invaluable not only to graduate students, but also to research workers and consultants in statistics. Helge Toutenburg is Professor for Statistics at the University of Muenchen. He has written about 15 books on linear models, statistical methods in quality engineering, and the analysis of designed experiments. His main interest is in the application of statistics to the fields of medicine and engineering.

This was the first pregnancy book I read. Frankly, I found it a bit scary. The authors clearly had a very hard time with conception and with their small-town North Carolina doctors. That seems to have made them a tad fanatical about moms-to-be doing *everything* "right" or they'll never have a child. And I'm not sure the authros' (expectation and) experience of homophobia is particularly informative for those of us in more progressive settings. I very much appreciate the info. Data Mining Using SAS Applications (Chapman & Hall/CRC Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Series) Review

Data Mining Using SAS Applications (Chapman and Hall/CRC Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this book is quite good. I wish I had it when I was working on my dissertation. I used all of the techniques in this book with SAS, and had to figure out this stuff on my own. I wish I hadn't had to go through all that, although it was a good learning experience. If I had had a resource like this book then I could have devoted more time to exploratory analysis and less time to the nuts and bolts of getting the programs to run.
I only gave it 4 stars however, because I thought the last chapter should be removed entirely. Reading Chapter 7 made me doubt the author throughout the whole rest of the book, which is not a good sign. Problems, some minor: neural networks are hardly an "emerging technology" for data mining. "Data warehousing" is not really a data mining technology, at least not how "technology" is defined throughout the whole rest of the book (i.e. as a technique). First and foremost, data warehousing is an organizational method for data, not a technique for analyzing it (which is what every single other topic covered in this book is designed to do: analyze). Market basket analysis is just ONE WAY to describe association rule mining. All association rules are NOT designed to help with marketing. This author obviously read Barry & Linoff (Data Mining for Marketing, Sales, and Customer Support) for his definition of what association rules are good for, and missed the whole point of how they can be used with ANY data, not just marketing data. Lastly, his bibliography in Chapter 7 is very thin; if his treatment of these "emerging technologies" is going to be so cursory, at least give the reader some decent pointers to more appropriate texts.
Another picky point: the beginning of the book talks about how it is designed to show how to use SAS if you DON'T have Enterprise Miner (which is good, since that's a really expensive thing that most students and faculty can't afford). And then this last chapter begins by saying how it will cover three emerging technologies for which you can use SAS ... which is all well and good, until you get to the last sentence of the last chapter, which says that you must use Enterprise Miner to do anything with these three emerging technologies. How frustrating for the reader who thinks they're going to cover emerging technologies the same way as the whole rest of the book!
Anyway, just ignore the last chapter of this book and enjoy the first 6. This book will definitely save you some time if you are interested in prediction, classification, clustering, principal components analysis, or common factor analysis.

Managing Selection in Changing Organizations: Human Resource Strategies Review

Managing Selection in Changing Organizations: Human Resource Strategies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As stated by series editor Eduardo Salas, "this volume is about the practice of selection strategies in rapidly changing organizations. A timely topic for both practitioners and scientists. Jerard F. Kehoe was able to assemble an excellent group of industrial / organizational psychologists to write about how selection interfaces with individual, social, and organizational factors. The chapters describe how demographic changes, team-membership, cultural differences, legislation, and social policy influence the selection strategy process. The chapters offer many useful and practical insights about the practice of selection strategies in an every-changing organizational world. This volume is invaluable to those concerned with applying selection processes in organizations and to those who research selection systems."
In this context, as a sample, in fourth chapter of this book, "Managing 'Customers' of Selection Processes", Stephen W. Gilliland and Bennett Cherry (1) focus on managing the customers of selection, (2) specifically consider the perspective of each customer group in each of the three stages of the selection process (that is, development, assessment, feedback), and (3) finally conclude the chapter with some summary recommendations for maintaining as successful customer-based selection system.
(1). Who Are the Customers? : In this section, Gilliland and Cherry define customers of selection, and their needs, desires, and goals for selection are summarized as :
a. Line Managers :
* Accurate and informative indicators of applicant potential.
* Quick and easy-to-use selection process.
* Flexibility and accommodation of selection procedures.
* Perceived validity of selection process.
b. Coworkers :
* Accurate and informative indicators of applicant potential.
* Input into the selection decision-making process.
* Perceived validity of selection process.
c. Applicants :
* Appropriate hiring decision.
* Unbiased, job-related selection process that gives them a chance to demonstrate their potential .
* Honest and sensitive interpersonel treatment.
* Timely and informative feedback.
(2). Managing Customers of Selection : After defining the stages of a customer-based selection system as development, assessment, and feedback, in this section, they consider how to manage the needs of the customers during each of these selection stages.
(3). Summary Recommendations : In this section, they made the following recommendations for managing the customers of selection.
a. For Line Managers and Coworkers :
* Communicate how and why a new selection system is being developed.
* Involve line managers in development and administration of the selection system.
* Train line managers in the use of the selection system and in effective interviewing and decision making.
* Simplify the assessment process to ease administration.
* Solicit feedback on the effectiveness of and satisfaction with the selection system.
b. For Applicants :
* Include applicant concerns in the development of the selection system.
* Provide applicants with an understanding of what the selection process entails and how it was developed.
* Make sure the selection procedures are job-related and unbiased, and give applicants a chance to demonstrate their potential.
* Make sure the selection process is consistently administered.
* Treat applicants with honesty and respect, and allow for two-way communication.
* Deliver timely and informative feedback to applicants on the hiring decision.
* Solicit feedback from applicants on their reactions to the selection process.
Not only this chapter, but this book as a whole is highly recommended for HR practitioners.

Digit Ratio: A Pointer to Fertility, Behavior, and Health (A volume in the Rutgers Series in Human Evolution, edited by Robert Trivers.) Review

Digit Ratio: A Pointer to Fertility, Behavior, and Health (A volume in the Rutgers Series in Human Evolution, edited by Robert Trivers.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book by John T. Manning, who is apparently the leading authority on digit ratio and its biological/hormonal causes.
To summarize: this book posits and goes about proving how prenatal testosterone levels affect the masculinazation of the fetus, resulting in a low 2d:4d digit ratio. This ratio is the ratio of finger length of the index finger vis-a-vis the ring finger on the same hand. Masculine ratios are under 1.0, meaning that the index finger is shorter than the ring finger. Feminine ratios are generally 1:1 or the index finger is slightly longer than the ring finger. Manning also goes on to determine how this ratio may be an indicator of adult masculine traits, such as athletic ability, musical ability, and physical aggressiveness and assertiveness.
What this book does right:
1. It's more of a textbook than casual reading. It presents copious data and is immaculately presented and organized in easy to read fashion. It is easy to refer back to over and over again, as it should be with good reference material;
2. As such, this book will dispel any disbelief in what is considered a mildly controversial topic in mainstream news. People are still uncomfortable with the fact that something as obvious as the finger length on their hands can tell a lot about them, even to total strangers;
3. Despite the copious anecdotal evidence and hard data, Manning does exercise due caution in jumping to conclusions about where this area of study may lead;
4. The prose is very succinct and to the point. Though only around 170 pages, it is packed with information;
This book only gets four stars because of some minor quibbles. First, it is not a book that will entertain the casual science reader. Those who will get the most benefit are those who are actually in a field of biological study that deals specifically with areas like prenatal hormonal conditions, sex differentiation of brain patterns, etc. Second, Manning may be overly conservative in conjecturing where this field of study may lead. Granted, he is justified in doing so, given the potentially controversial and ethically questionable course it may take; however, I felt this book leaves almost too much to further study, given the fact that scientists have known about the 2d:4d ratio and its biological roots for decades. At this stage, this book could have been written as a roadmap for further study rather than being mainly a recap for what has already been done.
Still, it is the only book of its kind that I know of, and it does very ample justice to a fascinating and obscure topic that literally affects all of us.

Could the length of your fingers predict a predisposition to breast cancer? Or musical genius? Or homosexuality? The author posits that relative lengths of the second and fourth digits in humans (2D:4D ratio) provides a window into fertility- and sex-related traits. It has been known for more than a century that men and women tend to differ in the relative lengths of their index and ring fingers, which upon casual observation seem fairly symmetrical. Men on average have fourth digits longer than their second digits, while women typically have the opposite. Digit ratios are unique in that they are fixed before birth, while other sexually dimorphic variables are fixed after puberty, and the same genes that control finger length also control the development of the sex organs. The 2D:4D ratio is the only prenatal sexually dimorphic trait that measurably explains conditions linking testosterone, oestrogen and human development, the author argues. The study of the ratio broadens our view of human ability, talent, behaviour, disposition, health and fertility.In this book, Manning presents evidence for how 2D:4D correlates with genetic traits ranging from sperm counts, the likelihood of having male versus female offspring, musical genius, homosexuality and sporting prowess, to autism, depression, heart attacks, or breast cancer, traits that are all linked to sex hormones.--This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
