Learning statistical procedures can be difficult from the onset no matter which field you enter, but beginning humanity-related statistics can seem like an uphill struggle if you find yourself being taught by someone who doesn't know their material. The reversal of that is also true; if the person teaching is armed with a little weapon called insight and they have tinkered with the electronics aspect of the quandary then you the best of both worlds. That's one of the great things about Dr. Zagumny's book; reading it shows you that he is a teacher but you can tell that Dr. Z isn't just a teacher sitting behind a keyboard. As you look into his method you can tell that Zagumny is a practitioner of research as well, utilizing what he has learned to develop a method for explaining statistics that need to be transcribed to SPSS. So, when reading this, you catch glints of the classroom and the field of research.
That's why, when starting out, I really respected this book.
When you look at this for yourself, remember that it is a beginner's guide in the realms of statistics and it is designed for a beginner's classroom. This is not to say that it doesn't have applications that go beyond that; to the contrary, a lot of the procedures can be utilized DEPENDING on what you need to do with your data. I'm am just trying to say that when you hit odder procedures you will have to utilize other sources - and more complex procedures will require a lot more theoretical research as well. Still, for beginning statistics, this is a great tool to help explain how SPSS works and it comes in at under 13 dollars. You couldn't ask for more for less.
A really great starter's guide for the SPSS learner.
