As one of my most favorite books, this is a great book that provides real-world control problems. The book reflexes a rich experience from the author, who has apparently been working for a long time in industry as well as academic/research environment. When I wanted to study robust control (H_2 and H_inf ) with some real applications, I was confused when considering the author's 2 books. I then emailed him directly for his advice and got a quick and nice response. I bought this book and totally satisfied with the money I paid. Although it seems expensive, but just buy it ...

To tailor time series models to a particular physical problem and to follow the working of various techniques for processing and analyzing data, one must understand the basic theory of spectral (frequency domain) analysis of time series. This classic book provides an introduction to the techniques and theories of spectral analysis of time series. In a discursive style, and with minimal dependence on mathematics, the book presents the geometric structure of spectral analysis. This approachmakes possible useful, intuitive interpretations of important time series parameters and provides a unified framework for an otherwise scattered collection of seemingly isolated results. The books strength lies in its applicability to the needs of readers from many disciplines with varying backgrounds in mathematics. It provides a solid foundation in spectral analysis for fields that include statistics, signal process engineering, economics, geophysics, physics, and geology. Appendices provide details and proofs for those who are advanced in math. Theories are followed by examples and applications over a wide range of topics such as meteorology, seismology, and telecommunications.Topics covered include Hilbert spaces; univariate models for spectral analysis; multivariate spectral models; sampling, aliasing, and discrete-time models; real-time filtering; digital filters; linear filters; distribution theory; sampling properties ofspectral estimates; and linear prediction. Key Features* Hilbert spaces* univariate models for spectral analysis* multivariate spectral models* sampling, aliasing, and discrete-time models* real-time filtering* digital filters* linear filters* distribution theory* sampling properties of spectral estimates* linear prediction

SPSS for Introductory and Intermediate Statistics: SPSS for Intermediate Statistics: Use and Interpretation Review

This book has been a life-saver. Its clear and concise about most of the main techniques you might need for analyzing your data. Its written as a practical guide to help you understand which statistical procedure to use. I'm a PhD student in Epidemiology and this is the book that really helped clear my concepts about the various statistical techniques and most importantly how and when to use them. All the classes I took in advanced mathematical statistics were full of jargon and theoretical stuff. This book is what helped me really understand the various techniques. Consider it a like a Dummies Guide to Practical Statistics..... I hope the author writes another book called SPSS for Advanced Statistics.

Empirical Methods in Short-Term Climate Prediction Review

Empirical Methods in Short-Term Climate Prediction
Average Reviews:

Jokes about weather predictions are as old as those predictions. But joking aside, the book shows gradual and steady improvements in predictive power. Unsurprisingly, some of this is driven by cheaper computing power. But the book really does not discuss that. Instead the advances are due to deeper reasons. Like improved modelling of wave dispersion from an initial event.
Examples in the text include a change in the choice of basis functions and the dimensionality of the modelling. Some of the discussion takes the reader right back to introductory linear algebra and the construction of orthogonal functions. This is done empirically in one chapter.
The narrative also looks further out, at climatology, as opposed to weather predictions. Here, the intersection with the initial thread is in the short term climate predictions, which in fact forms the main thrust of the book. Overall, the text is very encouraging. No limits are suggested to future improvements.

This clear and accessible text describes the methods underlying short-term climate prediction at time scales of 2 weeks to a year.Although a difficult range to forecast accurately, there have been several important advances in the last ten years, most notably in understanding ocean-atmosphere interaction (El Nino for example), the release of global coverage data sets, and in prediction methods themselves. With an emphasis on the empirical approach, the text covers in detail empirical wave propagation, teleconnections, empirical orthogonal functions, and constructed analogue. It also provides a detailed description of nearly all methods used operationally in long-lead seasonal forecasts, with new examples and illustrations. The challenges of making a real time forecast are discussed, including protocol, format, and perceptions about users.Based where possible on global data sets, illustrations are not limited to the Northern Hemisphere, but include several examples from the Southern Hemisphere.

Prediction in Forensic and Neuropsychology: Sound Statistical Practices Review

Prediction in Forensic and Neuropsychology: Sound Statistical Practices

This is an extremely important and valuable book that presents a number of important ideas in a straightforward fashion. I've seen nothing like it. So, why 4 stars and the caveat? This is not for the casual or credulous reader. There are quite a number of very significant errors which one can only detect by following the text very closely and solving the problems in the book as well as one's own problems (that one might come across in practice or make up, that is). Since you probably don't know the material in the first place (at least I didn't), if you are reading the book, and the material is far from intuitive, you won't know if the error is in the formula, the conceptualization, the computation, or your own lack of cognitive power. Sometimes, entire parts of paragraphs are cut and pasted somewhere else, and you will wonder if you just arrived from an alternate universe, or have been dreaming. Erlbaum has been extremely generous (philanthropic) to psychology, so I don't want to discourage people from buying the book, or be unappreciative. So, buy the book, learn, and send them (or Franklin himself) something about the errors, and maybe they will get a 2nd edition out that is closer to being effectively proofread. You may want to read it with a colleague - the errors are that disconcerting and hard to sort out. Bear in mind that I think they are errors - but, why trust me? I've likened it to trying to learn, experientially, how to ski while blindfolded, with no boots, and without knowing if there is any snow.

Psychologists are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the ecological validity of their assessment procedures--to show that the recommendations concluding their evaluations are relevant to urgent concerns in the legal and social policy arenas, such as predicting dangerousness, awarding compensation, and choosing a custodial parent. How much damage does a referred patient have? Who or what "caused" the damage? What impact will it have on his or her future life, work, and family? And what can be done to remediate the damage? The purpose of this book is to provide sound objective methods for answering these questions. It integrates the knowledge of experienced practitioners who offer state-of-the-art summaries of the best current approaches to evaluating difficult cases with that of basic theorists who describe emerging methods in both predictive and inferential statistics, such as Bayesian networks, that have proven their value in other scientific fields. Arguably, the enterprise of psychological assessment is so interdependent with that of data analysis that attempts to make inferences without consideration of statistical implications is malpractice. Prediction in Forensic and Neuropsychology: Sound Statistical Practices clarifies the process of hypothesis testing and helps to push the clinical interpretation of psychological data into the 21st century. It constitutes a vital resource for all the stakeholders in the assessment process--practitioners, researchers, attorneys, and policymakers.

Personality at Work: Individual Differences in the Workplace Review

Personality at Work: Individual Differences in the Workplace
Average Reviews:

This book covers comprehensive areas in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, such as, vocational choice, work motivation and satisfaction, and selection, to which how personality relates. Based mainly upon Eysenck's personality model, Dr, Furnham clearly depicts the richness of past empirical research in each field, venturing to generalize the causal model of personality and the results. Good for practitioners who cannot completely agree with the statement "Every employee's behavior is determined MOSTLY by situational factors," and further, essential for Graduate students interested in "dispositional approach." P.S. -- I personally like Dr. Furnham's unique figure, "Characteristics which separate the two worlds -- academics and consultants" (p.xx). Must see!

Personality at Work examines the increasingly controversial role of individual differences in predicting and determining behavior at work. Adrian Furnham asks whether psychological tests measuring personality traits can predict behavior at work, such as job satisfaction, productivity, absenteeism and turnover. A comprehensive review of the literature from psychology, sociology and management science, this book is the only exhaustive and incisive multidisciplinary work to assess the role of psychological testing in the management of the workplace. As such, this volume is an enormously useful resource for the researcher and practitioner, as well as for students of psychology, management science and sociology.

Caliendo argues that how students are taught to think about the political system may have an effect on their adult attitudes. Drawing from interviews with teachers, analysis of textbooks and student surveys, the findings suggest that teachers make a difference in how students perceive parts of the system.
