Individual Assessment: As Practiced in Industry and Consulting (Applied Psychology Series) Review

Individual Assessment: As Practiced in Industry and Consulting (Applied Psychology Series)

Despite the importance of individual assessment in terms of organizational consulting practices, very few books cover this topic. As such, this book fills a definite need and does an great job of covering the topic for the professional reader or student. I used this book as recommended reading for a summer graduate course. In a short book, the authors manage to cover most of the important topics in sufficient detail so as to serve as a resource for those entering the field or getting their first job in individual assessment. If there are future editions, I would hope the authors would expand their coverage of developmental uses and of feedback.

Evidence-Based Emergency Care: Diagnostic Testing and Clinical Decision Rules (Evidence-Based Medicine)

As a emergency physician years removed from residency, this book was an excellent review of the biostatistic terminology and concepts essential to interpreting clinical trials. The reviews of each subject provide a clear and concise summary of the latest research, allowing me to have a wealth of information at my disposal without having to dig up each individual study. The results are presented objectively and are methodically analyzed. I intend to bring this book to the ED and leave it for all of my colleagues to have during their shifts as well.

This useful handbook provides a concise compilation of the evidence supporting diagnostic testing and clinical decision rules in emergency care. Clinical decision rules are now widely recognised as best practice for the ordering of diagnostic tests in the emergency department.Aimed at all physicians working with emergency and acute patients, the book begins with an overview of how to evaluate a diagnostic test using an evidence-based approach, followed by an explanation of the clinical decision rules and the methods of assessing the strength and applicability of the clinical prediction rule. These introductory chapters are followed by sections covering the following clinical areas:* Traumatic Injuries* Cardiology* Infectious Disease* Surgical and Abdominal Complaints* Urology* Neurology* Ophthalmology, Hematology, Rheumatology* Pulmonology. For each test and clinical decision rule, the most current and best available studies in the literature are discussed and applied to emergency department and acute care patients in addressing the question at hand, followed by an overall recommendation on how to use the test or rule in the clinical context.Evidence-Based Emergency Care is an accessible and extremely useful reference for physicians at all levels to use in applying an evidence-based approach to ordering and interpreting tests in an acute care environment.

The Paradox of Predictivism Review

The Paradox of Predictivism
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent discussion of the topic. Prediction is essential for science. An unpredicted result can be interpreted to fit any theory. Accurate prediction supports a particular theory. The paradox appears to be the ability to predict based on limited knowledge, as with Mendeleev predicting missing elements with little or no understanding of protons. The author supposes additional credibility from prediction rather than results interpreted to fit a theory. A modern application might be the theory of evolution that predicts both the natural rise of life from non-life and the natural rise of complexity from simple life. Astrophysical evolution also predicts the formation of galaxies and solar systems from a "big bang." What is predicted and what is observed? This is the essence of the scientific method.

An enduring question in the philosophy of science is the question of whether a scientific theory deserves more credit for its successful predictions than it does for accommodating data that was already known when the theory was developed. In The Paradox of Predictivism, Eric Barnes argues that the successful prediction of evidence testifies to the general credibility of the predictor in a way that evidence does not when the evidence is used in the process of endorsing the theory. He illustrates his argument with an important episode from nineteenth-century chemistry, Mendeleev's Periodic Law and its successful predictions of the existence of various elements. The consequences of this account of predictivism for the realist/anti-realist debate are considerable, and strengthen the status of the 'no miracle' argument for scientific realism. Barnes's important and original contribution to the debate will interest a wide range of readers in philosophy of science.

Statistical Analysis of Environmental Space-Time Processes (Springer Series in Statistics) Review

Statistical Analysis of Environmental Space-Time Processes (Springer Series in Statistics)

This is a chatty discussion of mathematical techniques for analyzing sampled spatially distributed data.
I found it quite accessible. It included advances in classical techniques occurring since I last studied geostatistics. The issue of estimating extremes is openly discussed if not completely laid to rest.
Bottom line: I liked it and found it useful.

This book provides a broad introduction to the subject of environmental space-time processes, addressing the role of uncertainty. It covers a spectrum of technical matters from measurement to environmental epidemiology to risk assessment. It showcases non-stationary vector-valued processes, while treating stationarity as a special case. In particular, with members of their research group the authors developed within a hierarchical Bayesian framework, the new statistical approaches presented in the book for analyzing, modeling, and monitoring environmental spatio-temporal processes. Furthermore they indicate new directions for development.

Psychosocial Factors in Pain: Critical Perspectives Review

Psychosocial Factors in Pain: Critical Perspectives
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent compiliation. It brings one up to date on what is currently known about many psychosocial factors in pain. The one drawback is that the issue of pain as a desired stimulus (as in the case of self-mutilation, passive algolagnia, and certain religious ceremonies) is never addressed. I personally feel that this is major drawback to the book. Nevertheless this is one of the best books on the subject to date, and is an excellent resource for anyone studying pain.

Issues related to evaluation, prevention, and management are explored in depth, with coverage of such topics as the role of pain management in primary care settings, the prediction of responses to pain and responses to treatment, and the influence of gender.
